Friends of Midtown spring clean-up scheduled for April 26

MIDTOWN HARRISBURG – April 9, 2008 – Friends of Midtown is pleased to announce its annual spring litter clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, April 26. Volunteers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Broad Street Market central courtyard.

A product of Friends of Midtown’s Beautification Committee, this yearly event aims to involve residents in their neighborhood in a very hands-on manner, collecting trash and other debris to physically clean up the streets.

Beautification Committee co-chair Don Barnett said this year’s clean-up will focus on Third through Sixth streets in Midtown. “This is the first time efforts have been concentrated on the east side of Midtown,” Barnett said.

Designated clean-up routes and coverage area will be determined and assigned based on turnout.

All interested volunteers are welcome. “Although this event is facilitated by Friends of Midtown, we encourage the participation of anyone interested in a cleaner Midtown and a cleaner Harrisburg,” Barnett said.

The Broad Street Market will reward “Market Dollars” to those who participate. Interested parties may e-mail beautification@friendsofmidtown.org for more information or to R.S.V.P.

Friends of Midtown’s Beautification Committee has organized both spring and fall clean-ups over the last several years resulting in hundreds of bags of trash.

Committee co-chair John Eidem said, “We understand this is a short-term solution until people decide to change their habits and stop littering, but I do feel a sense of satisfaction after these events and look forward to the 26th.”

In the event of inclement weather, a rain date is scheduled for May 3.

Friends of Midtown is a Pennsylvania 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the ongoing economic and cultural development of Midtown Harrisburg.
