It’s “Turnoff Week”

April 20-26 is National “Turnoff Week,” where we’re encouraged to forgo the West Wing DVDs and Tivo-charged prime time delights and do things other than watch television, play video games and surf the Internet … like read books.

Locally, Barnes & Noble is helping to promote the week with a series of free, public events based on alternatives to our electronically charged entertainment. For more information, click on.

Saturday, April 18 at noon
Author Don Helin, Thy Kingdom Come

Local author Don Helin will be on hand to greet readers,
discuss writing, and autograph copies of his book.  Thy Kingdom Come
brings together an international cast of terrorists from white supremacists to
the Quebec Liberation Front.  Mr. Helin is also the local group leader of
the Pennwriters group that meets monthly at Barnes & Noble Camp Hill.

 Jump Street and The Big Read present:
Maltese Mystery Madness

Calling all teens and young readers!  Join Jump Street
actors and artists as they present Maltese Mystery Madness, a curious
blend of scavenger hunt and the “Amazing race.”  A portion of
voucher sales will benefit Jump Street, a private, nonprofit, community based
arts incubator, serving Central Pennsylvania for over twenty years.

Special Storytime: Explorer Extraordinaire!

Children of all ages are welcome to explore the great
outdoors with fun activities and the New Fancy Nancy book, Explorer
Extraordinaire!

Wednesday, April 22 at 10 a.m.
Outdoors & Me a special event for our youngest readers!

Join us in celebrating Earth Day with a presentation by
Wendy Plowman.  Outdoors & Me will look at the world around us in our
own backyard including birds, insects, trees, plants, color, sounds – all that
nature has to offer.  A short watercolor demonstration with participant
input will be included. A part of our ongoing celebration of Turnoff Week and
Earth Day!

Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
Conserving PA with Brook Lenker from www.iConservePA.org

Join us in celebrating Earth Day with a presentation by
Brook Lenker from www.iConservePA.org.
The presentation will feature a history of conservation in PA to present day
and the problems we now face.  Of special interest is a discussion of
activities we can all do in our backyards to assist in conserving PA. Become a
PA iCon… stop by the photo station and tell us how you conserve PA! A part of
our ongoing celebration of Turnoff Week and Earth Day!

Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Artist Sandra Blair

International Wildlife Artist Sandra Blair will spend the
day in our café painting.  Ms. Blair will discuss wildlife and painting
with café patrons.  Her artwork is featured in the April/May issue of
International Artist magazine.  Artwork is posted online at www.natureartists.com/sandra_blair.

Author Jennifer Storm

Meet local activist and author Jennifer Storm.  Ms.
Storm’s book Blackout Girl is a riveting memoir of what happens to a
teenage girl whose life is awash in alcohol, drugs, and the trauma of
rape.  Ms. Storm will hold a discussion and book signing bringing
attention to Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Saturday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
Author Jeffrey Adams

Author and historian Jeffrey Adams will greet readers and
Harrisburg enthusiasts alike!  His popular book, Harrisburg PA: A
Postcard History
, has been featured recently in local media.  Mr.
Adams compiled the book with images from his own extensive collection of
postcards.
