Who’s open: New Year’s Day

Share Article

image from blog.pennlive.comSupposing you’re not too hungover, a bunch of bars promise to be open on New Year’s Day for NFL bowl games or to serve the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of pork and sauerkraut (I’ll be showing you how to make this at home shortly).

If you’re serious about turning a new leaf in 2012 (or just like to do wild things for a good cause), you’ll want to join the Penguin Plunge on City Island. The event is much like it sounds – you dive into the freezing cold Susquehanna with a gaggle of other nuts, all to benefit the Harrisburg Humane Society and Harrisburg River Rescue.

Afterwards, the party is no doubt at Flinchy’s, where you can score all-you-can-eat pork and sauerkraut (plus mashed potatoes, applesauce and kraut dogs) for $7. If you think you sauerkraut is gross or slimy, then you haven’t had Carl Hursh’s sauerkraut, and that’s what’s served at Flinchy’s. Go, enjoy. They’re open all day.

Update: If you’re a local Steelers fan, you can thank the NFL for forcing you to watch your team in a bar, no matter how hungover you are. Arooga’s, Zembie’s and the Madre have the game. Moe’s in Mechanicsburg is closed. I’ll update with any other bars hosting the Steelers game.

All Arooga’s location are open from noon to 2 a.m. for all the bowl game action.

The Blue Moose opens at noon with football games on their 21 TVs, plus Coors Light pitcher specials.

Brewhouse Grille will be open from noon to 2 a.m., also carrying bowl games on the back deck.

Dockside Willie’s will be serving traditional pork and sauerkraut.

Gullifty’s opens at noon for football bowl games and also will be serving pork and sauerkraut.

The Madre opens at 4 p.m. with Bud Light and wing specials all day – plus the full kitchen.

MoMo’s BBQ Grill will be serving its famous smoked pork and sauerkraut all day.

Pints opens at noon with football, chili and pork & sauekraut.

RockBass Grill seeks to quench your hangover with a little hair of the dog. Get $4 mimosas all day, plus brunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Zembie’s opens at noon with bowl games on their many TVs. Get 50 cent wings and $2 Coors Light pints. Happy Hour is from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Or, something different:

What are you resolving for 2012?
