Mountain Road Take the Stage at Abbey Bar, Release New Album “Momentum”

I am constantly looking for local bands who know how to release a solid album. I’m talking a high-quality, well-produced, thought-out album and the ever-important release party to kick off it off!

I’ve been meaning to check out local country rock band Mountain Road for some time now, and for whatever reason, my schedule never lined up for me to make it to one of their shows. Then they decided to host their album release party at my favorite live music venue in the Harrisburg area, The Abbey Bar.

I wanted to arrive early and post up at my usual spot (in the back, end of bar), but when I walked into The Abbey Bar are 8:30 p.m., it was packed! Definitely one of the strongest crowds I have seen in there for a local show in a long time.

Once Mountain Road hit the stage, the crowd was swelling with excitement. They opened with “Overflow,” a high energy song that gets the party started! There were plenty of people raising their beers and dancing right along from the very first note. Some folks were singing along with every word, and it was easy to see that Mountain Road definitely created some momentum for themselves.

I moved closer to the stage and was immediately impressed by the musicianship and stage presence the 4-piece band created. Listen to any of their music and it’s easy to see (or hear) that these guys all have great voices. Watching them harmonize together was great — it’s something very rare to experience on a local level, especially. It was a great blend of rock, country, and blues music with a hard hitting drummer (A soft hitting drummer is a real thing, and it drives me nuts), grooving bass lines, and some really great country-style guitar licks.

Aside from getting an early preview of the new album “Momentum” and getting to go to a great album release show, I got a chance to ask the guys a few questions about their music and the new album:

MJ: How has the local scene received your music?

MR: The local scene has always been very receptive. We are a blend of current and classic and have been compared to the likes of Zac Brown Band. One of the most unique things about our band is any one of the four members could be a lead singer in their own right, so we feature a lot of four-part vocal harmony.

MJ: Tell me about the new album, “Momentum”

MR: The album was recorded and produced at The Green Room Studio in Harrisburg by Derek Euston. We came up with the title “Momentum” because it was ultimately the word that has defined us over this past year. We are driven to make great music, which has resulted in a wave of positive momentum to take us from local, regional, to national.

MJ: You guys have shared the stage with some big names in the industry — what experience really stands out for you?

MR: Having the opportunity to perform at I-105’s annual FallFest the past 3 of 4 years was definitely a great honor and allowed us to open for some major national acts. However, our favorite show so far is when we shared the stage with Frankie Ballard at the Chameleon Club. It was a packed house and the energy was great!

MJ: I was listening to the album, and the track “My Perfect Life” really stands out to me. What is the song about and what does it mean to you?

MR (Kevin Cole): The inspiration for this song came to me after coming home from a long day of working in the rain. I was greeted by my love at the front door with a smile on her face. I later sat down and reflected on my current life situation and realized that I have nothing to complain about. My life was actually a whole lot better than I thought. The song really comes down to being thankful for the gifts you have and how having a healthy relationship can make a considerable difference in your life and overall attitude.

MJ: What can your fans expect from Mountain Road in 2017 to keep the momentum going?

MR: We are still in contractual discussion on booking some locals shows and, we have a few big show announcements coming any day. We’ll also be opening for some great national artists at the Keystone Country Jam at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster on May 13.
