It is time to break out the sweatpants, watch a bunch of football, and muster up the courage to once again squirm in fear as your aunt slops her mystery casserole onto your plate of homemade goodness. Can someone pass me a roll?!
Yes, Thanksgiving brings us all together through friendship and family to eat dinner at 1 p.m. and bite your tongue as you listen to your family talk about politics, religion and why you aren’t married/pregnant yet.
But fear not, my friends, because Thanksgiving weekend is always amazing for live music in our area!
Here are some of my top picks for live, local music to help you escape this weekend.
Wednesday, Nov. 22
The biggest party night of the year, a.k.a. the biggest high school reunion you’d ever want to avoid. I suggest checking out some local hip-hop at Momo’s BBQ and Grill with sounds from DJ Abeanoo featuring Alonda Rich, Vito Depierro, Entellekt, Dwight Lep and Machine Life Empire.
There will be free food with admission and the beat drops at 9 p.m.
If hip-hop isn’t your thing, head up to Joe K’s Brewhouse and check out the award-winning D-Bo for a night filled with great covers that span all genres from funk to country! The music starts at 9 p.m. and lasts all night long!
Thursday, Nov. 23
Let’s face it, there aren’t too many options to help you dance off that extra plate of yams with marshmallows and syrup on Thanksgiving Day. I’d suggest heading over to Crawdaddy’s early to check out Positive Force Experience for some beautiful neo-soul sounds to make you thankful for living in a city with such talented musicians and great live music. Show starts at 1 p.m. Get there early to grab yourself a seat!
As for Thanksgiving night, well, I’d suggest sitting back and enjoying the evening with your friends and family. Remember all of the good in your life, have some good laughs and pig out on Christmas cookies!
Friday, Nov. 24
Black Friday madness! If you’re like me, you avoid any type of retail and head straight away to your favorite watering hole, brewery or, live music venue. I will be heading over to River City City Blues Club and Dart Room for Nate Myers & The Aces to get down with their rockin blues sound and sip on a few gin martinis.
The Mighty Klucks open up the show at 9 p.m., and tickets are available through Ticketfly for only $5.
If you really want to kick it up a notch, head over to the Radisson Hotel for the 92.1 WTPA Birthday Bash featuring Kix! This all-ages show has tickets available for as low as $25 in advance and the doors open at 7 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 25
I love a good album release and a great local brew! Saturday night, head over to ZeroDay Brewing Co. for The Tsunami Experiment’s album release show. This 4-piece instrumental band from right here in Harrisburg brings a 21st-century upgrade to some vintage 1960s style surf music.
Admission is free and the brews are always delicious.
With the holidays upon us, make sure you take a moment to step back and be thankful. If you do go out, be smart and have a designated driver or catch and Uber.
