While Lancaster has a great array of shops to help you fill your closet, it also has a ton of great places to help you fill your home, too.
With its offering of handmade home decor, antiques, and accessories, Serendipity Mom is literally your Etsy cart come to life. The shop features Etsy-style favorites including charming farmhouse & cottage home decor, upcycled furnishings, and other unique, thoughtful gifts.
I chatted with owner Elizabeth Lingg (who is one of the friendliest shop owners you’ll meet) for the scoop on Serendipity Mom’s style and socially-conscious philosophy.
What’s the inspiration behind your shop? What’s the style and aesthetic?
EL: Serendipity Mom started as a mom-blog that focused on DIY tips and tricks, kid-approved recipes and being a pillar of support for mamas from all walks of life who wanted to do it all while keeping a sense of humor. Throughout my journey, I was amazed by the personal stories and handcrafted talent of these moms who were also busy raising a family and working full time. Our brick & mortar shop serves to empower female makers to showcase their extraordinary work while redistributing resources back into the local economy and other small businesses. We’re proud to feature products made by moms for moms.
What are your favorite pieces in the shop?
Without a doubt, I am enamored with all of the handmade products by different artists, many of whom are right here in Lancaster County. Every time Deerly Loved Designs brings in a new delivery of hand-sewn bandana bibs, I can’t stop “oohing” and “aahing” at the adorable boho-chic fabric prints (especially anything with llamas). I never grow tired of walking past the framed silhouettes of fawns and feathers, lovingly hand-cut by a grandmother of 8 (soon to be 9). And the entire shop smells absolutely delightful from the hand-poured soy candles in scents like Garden Mint and Blackberry Sage by mama-maker, Bearfoot Naturals.
Why do you bring pieces into the shop?
The best part of curating different handmade brands is learning the backstories of the artists, getting to know their families and seeing the passion that they have for their craft. I also love any excuse to go antiquing and the excitement of finding one-of-a-kind pieces to bring into the shop is my idea of serendipity!
Lancaster is this energetic hub where you can raise a thriving family, explore a growing culinary mecca and cultivate your own dreams and aspirations. In addition to never having a shortage of things to do, there is an incredible amount of creative talent everywhere you turn and endless outlets in which to showcase it.
For those who love Pier 1 or Home Goods, you’ve been warned — you’ll fall in love with Serendipity Mom! Just call it a “happy accident” — or serendipity.
