Sometimes you just need to slow down and enjoy the classics.
For me, this would normally include either Taylor Swift’s first album or season one of The Office, The King and I, which is running through Sunday at Hershey Theatre, did the trick this week.
It’s literally a classic — “Getting to Know You” is one of the most widely recognized Broadway songs in history.
Ironically, The King and I is culturally relevant. The entire plot centers on Anna, a British schoolteacher hired to teach the royal children English, and the King overcoming their cultural differences pertaining to education, gender roles and life in general. The show takes a humorous approach to the learning curve, but not without plucking your heartstrings and pulling you in emotionally.
From the lavish sets to the show-stopping vocals, the show is a true first-class production. Elena Shadow (Anna) and Jose Llana (the King) are brilliant, and their banter and chemistry are both believable and enjoyable to watch as the show progresses.
The rest of the cast is engaging and entertaining — and you’ll instantly fall in love with the royal children (they’re too cute!) It may take place in Siam, but the show shines in Hershey.
If you plan on making a night of it, definitely check out Hershey’s go-to for Italian food, Fenicci’s. Intern Jimi and I stopped by before the show this week for drinks and dinner, and we had a great time at the bar chatting with the staff and the other diners.
Fenicci’s bar is cozy and they make the best espresso martini in the area (which I sadly didn’t order in fear of too much caffeine, which I definitely regret!) You’ll love the martini if you’re into coffee. Heads up if you do plan on visiting Fenicci’s before heading to the Theatre, be sure to give yourself some extra time for dinner. It’s a pretty popular place to hit before the show, and you won’t want to miss any of the first act.
It’s a favorite among the performers visiting Hershey, too, so you may run into a few stars if you decide to stop by for dessert or a nightcap after the show.
