Pregame your weekend of football with some football.
Yes, Fall Saturdays and Sundays are dominated by college and NFL football, and I’m here for that.
However, there’s a way to make your weekend sports binge even better, and sometimes it starts as early as 7:30 a.m.
I’m talking about soccer (football), and more specifically, the English Premier League.
Not too long ago it was a challenge to find any sort of soccer on TV let alone European leagues.
Now, stations like NBC have put money and time behind featuring the world’s most popular sport, and local bars are taking notice.
Since games in England start at 7:30 a.m. our time, it’s the perfect excuse to bust out of the house for a pint and breakfast at the bar.
Tottenham fans turn Midtown Tavern into their own little piece of White Hart Lane right here in Harrisburg.
Harrisburg’s Spurs club is one of the strongest local supporters group. They number close to 80 fans for big games and even are recognized by the team in England.
The club started small a few years ago but has grown significantly in the last year. Midtown was packed for their Champions League Final game in May, and they have had a strong showing so far this season.
Check out their Facebook group, and meet them at the Midtown for the next game.
Note: While Midtown Tavern is the official home of the Spurs, they don’t typically open for games before 10 a.m. If it’s a pesky 7:30 a.m. start, you’ll have to find make alternative plans.
Speakeasy is the perfect combo of good beer, good food, and plenty of soccer.
There is no team-specific affiliation, and you’ll find a spattering of team colors and scarves around the bar.
Come as you are. Root for your team. Or, if you don’t have a team yet, come for the Bloody Marys and a Full English Breakfast.
Speak has a lot of TVs dedicated to soccer on Saturdays and Sundays. Plus, they have premium soccer channels, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding your team.
Mr. G’s Sports Bar
If you’re looking for a bar that’s open for the uber-early games, Mr. G’s is your best bet.
Mr. G’s is known around town as the go-to soccer bar. It’s the home of the American Outlaws and now the official home for the Harrisburg Heat.
Mr. G’s doesn’t just have local and national affiliations, they go global as well. They are now the official bar for Central PA Gooners, a local Arsenal FC supporters group.
Soccer is the focus for the Gooners, but they also use their common love of soccer for good as well. At the start of this season, they ran their “Gooners vs Cancer” and raised more than $12,000 across the country for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Check out their Facebook page and meet them at Mr. G’s for the next game.
Opening time on weekends can change due to staffing and game availability. Give them a call at 717-233-0456 mid-week to see when they’ll be open for this week’s games.
At Mr. G’s you’ll find your usual suspects of local beer, mixed drinks, and a few seasonal cocktails. Dining options includes bar food like wings, sandwiches, and burgers.
Soccer all over
If you can’t make it out to one of the above, don’t fret. As I mentioned, it’s easier than ever to get soccer on the telly.
You can always ask for the bartender to put on a game if it’s an appropriate setting. Also, make sure you know the channel. Don’t make the bartender fumble around looking for it.
