About the book
The Nickel Boys follows-up Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Underground Railroad,” which also won the National Book Award among a host of other honorable recognitions.
Whitehead’s 10th book dramatizes another point in American history through the story of two boys sent to reform school during the Jim Crow-era in Florida.
It follows Elwood Curtis and Turner as they try to survive by scheming and avoiding trouble at all costs. A fateful decision while at the school pits tension between the boys and causes a lasting impact.
The Nickel Boys is based on a true story of a reform school that operated for 111 years and changed the lives of thousands of children throughout its history.
