The Fulton is on Fire this Season: Smokey Joes and Sweat

Share Article

If you’ve been waiting to visit The Fulton Theatre in Lancaster, now’s the time to do so. The theatre’s current productions may just be two of its very best.

Main Stage: Smokey Joe’s Cafe

On the main stage is Smokey Joe’s Cafe, a rocking-and-rolling revue (in this case, it’s all singing, no dialogue) featuring nearly 40 chart-topping hits from decades past.

The cast is smaller than other productions this season – Smokey Joe’s only has nine actors – but the talent is just as robust. When a show only features singing and dancing, those skills must be top-notch to make the performance successful, and this cast absolutely delivers.

To be honest, I think this show featured the best vocal performances I’ve ever seen at The Fulton. Overall, Smokey Joe’s is soulful, smooth, and even silly at times. Do not miss it!

Smokey Joe’s runs through May 5.

The Fulton Theatre’s 2021/2022 season is in its home stretch. Next, catch Man of La Mancha, which runs May 17 through June 22. Then, Jersey Boys rounds out the season, with performances June 28 through Aug. 7.

Groff Studio Series: Sweat

Upstairs in the Tell Studio Theatre on The Fulton’s fourth floor houses the Groff Studio Series. The space is dedicated to showcasing new and emerging theatre works that spark meaningful dialogue. The Tell Studio Theatre seats around 100 people in various configurations tailored to each production.

Currently, audiences can catch Pulitzer Prize-winning Sweat on stage.

Sweat is an intimate portrait of race, class, violence, addiction, friendship, and family played amongst a group of factory workers in Reading. The story is both timely and compelling, and the cast tells it with incredible poise and talent.

The Fulton is committed to inspiring community conversation and change, and Sweat is a perfect catalyst for that dialogue. It’s one of the most powerful shows I’ve seen, and I definitely recommend seeing it if you can.

Sweat runs through April 24.
