Sara Bozich contributor Hope shares tips for joining or starting a book club.
What’s better than a good book? A good book enjoyed with good friends — or at least with other people who like to read, too. Book clubs and reading circles are nothing new, and they are great ways to dig deeper into your latest read!
Why join or start a book
Reading between the lines
Whether it be with your family, your friends or new “friends,” book clubs offer a new approach to reading. Book clubs are a great way to enrich your reading experience because other readers can offer new viewpoints, thoughts, and interpretations on the storyline that you may not have considered.
Reading new books
Some of my friends and I read House of Gucci in preparation for the movie. Non-fiction and historical novels aren’t my typical go-to genres, but when my friend suggested reading the book before the movie, it sounded like pretty good “due diligence.” I never would have thought to actually read a real book about the Gucci family (and not do a deep internet dive) so I appreciated the suggestion. Similarly, book clubs can introduce you to new genres you may not typically grab off the shelf.
Reading with new “characters”
You’re *bound* to meet new friends from your reading circle, especially if you’re joining a virtual or community club!
Reading to … read
A book club is a great way to commit to what you love. You’ll be motivated to carve out and dedicate time to reading!
How to find a book club
“Check out” the library
What better place to find a book club than a place that is literally made for books? This is a great way to find people who share your interests OR explore new topics.
Explore your town
Many community organizations, bookstores, and clubs host book clubs.
Be an e-reader
Just like it has with everything else, the Internet has made it easier than ever to find a book club you can join virtually.
Tell your own story
Grab your friends, family, coworkers, gym buddies, your neighbors, carpool moms, literally anyone … and start your own club!
What to consider when starting your own book club
Content
Not to be too direct, but what the heck are you going to read? Several thought leaders, celebrities, and authors offer suggestions through “book picks.” Check out Oprah’s and Reese Witherspoon’s book clubs. Some libraries even offer their own book club kits to get you started!
Schedule
Establish how often you will meet. A good start is either bi-weekly or monthly. This will also help determine how much content the club will cover and discuss at meetings.
Location
How will you set the scene? Perhaps you’ll swap hosting duties each meeting and everyone brings a snack or dish (maybe even themed from your current read!) Or you’ll chat over happy hour at your go-to bar.
