Theatre contributor Hope shares updates on Lancaster’s theatre scene this summer.
You’ll probably be asked this summer if you’re going down the shore. While Lancaster isn’t exactly close to the ocean, you can still hit the beach – sort of – with Lancaster’s theatre scene.
Disney’s The Little Mermaid at Dutch Apple Theatre
The Lancaster dinner theatre is taking it under the sea for its latest show, which runs through Aug. 6.
It’s always fun to see stories you saw on the big screen come to life, and Dutch Apple’s Little Mermaid calls upon all things beloved from the classic Disney musical – bright colors, sassy sea friends, and catchy tunes. The quirky chirps (literally) from Ariel’s friends will keep you laughing and smiling throughout the entire show. It’s definitely worth bringing the whole family too, check out a matinee!
Audiences can visit Chicago during Dutch Apple’s next show, which begins Aug. 12.
Jersey Boys at The Fulton Theatre
While Jersey Boys isn’t a story about the beach, it does tell the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, who spent time performing in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The Fulton’s production was originally slated for the 2019/2020 season but couldn’t make it back to the stage until this year. It’s a wonderful cap to an incredible season. The four band “members” – led by Jonathan Mousset, who previously starred in Fulton’s Cinderella – have great chemistry and are extremely talented. Jersey Boys has all the sass, scandal, and style of the sixties, and The Fulton’s telling hits all the right notes.
It’s always fun to see a jukebox musical, which features popular songs rather than numbers written for a specific show, and see the story play out through songs you know. Ironically, a few of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons’ classic hits like “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Beggin’” have recently become popular again thanks to TikTok covers and remixes.
Grab tickets and make it a date night! Try the food hall at Southern Market Lancaster or grab a bite and beer at The Warehouse District Beer Garden, right down the road from the Wynridge Farm Tasting Room.
Jersey Boys runs through Aug. 7. The 2022/2023 season kicks off in September with another run of Kinky Boots. See the full-season lineup here.
