If you’re looking for something different to do this summer — something fun, affordable, a little unexpected, and memorable — let me make the case for a night at BAPS Motor Speedway.
Even if you’ve never considered yourself a “racing person,” hear me out.
BAPS is one of those local gems that many people drive past for years without realizing just how much fun it can be. It’s loud, high-energy, family-friendly, and surprisingly budget-friendly, especially compared to most summer outings these days.
Whether you’re planning a family night out, looking for something new to do with friends, or just want to experience a classic Central PA tradition, BAPS is worth adding to your summer list.

It’s One of the Most Affordable Family Nights Out Around
Let’s start with the obvious: affordability matters.
A night at BAPS is refreshingly inexpensive compared to concerts, sporting events, amusement parks, or even a family dinner out.
Here’s why:
- Children 12 and under are always free
- Students ages 13-17 are just $5
- Parking is free
- Camping is free
- Women get $5 admission during Ladies Nights
And — you can BYOB, which makes it even easier to keep costs down for adults. You can pack a cooler with your favorite snacks and your choice of bevs (don’t forget a coozy). My husband makes fun of me for bringing canned wine to the races, but I like what I like! You also can bring in non-alcoholic beverages and food, too. Just be sure you’re following these rules (no glass, cooler size limits, etc).
If you’d rather grab food onsite, BAPS has you covered with Dottie’s Snack Shack on Turn 1 with your race night basics – burgers, chicken fingers, fries, plus food trucks outside at many events.

It’s More Than Just Racing
Sure, the racing is the main event — and it’s genuinely exciting even if you’re new to it (sometimes we just like to pick a car we like and root for them!) — but BAPS has done a great job creating a full-on entertainment experience around the races.
Throughout the season, the speedway hosts a wide variety of themed nights and special events that make each visit feel a little different.
Highlights this year include:
- Cub Scout Nights (next one is Aug. 22)
- Ladies Nights ($5 admission for women)
- Carnival Food Truck Fest May 7-10
- Kids Night on Aug. 8 – kids bike races during intermission!!
- Lantern Fest on Sept. 12
- Kids Candy Scramble during the final Ladies Night on Sept. 26 (and yes, they mean TONS of free candy for kids)
There are also Wednesday Food Truck Nights beginning in May, featuring:
- Free practice racing
- Food trucks onsite
- A lower-key way to check out the speedway if you want to test the waters before committing to a full race night
Big Events for Racing Fans (and Curious First-Timers)
If you want the full “wow” experience, BAPS hosts several marquee race nights that bring major energy and packed crowds.
Notable events include:
- $5 Keystone Nationals on June 7
- PA Speedweek on June 28
- World of Outlaws on July 29
Even if you know absolutely nothing about racing, these bigger events are a blast. The atmosphere alone makes them worth experiencing at least once.

Why It Works for Families
One of the best things about BAPS is that it truly feels welcoming to everyone.

This is not an intimidating or niche environment. It’s families with kids, friend groups, longtime racing fans, curious first-timers, and people just looking for something different to do on a summer night.
BAPS also starts its racing a bit earlier than some tracks and is great at keeping things moving, so you’re not stuck there late at night. For instance, on Kids Night in early August, it’s a “Feature-only” event, meaning things won’t warm up with hot laps and heat races, which allows them to host a family-focused event that still gets your kids to bed on time.
Racing at BAPS is casual, unpretentious, and easy to enjoy, whether you know the difference between the cars on the track (or what a hot lap is) or not.
For kids, it’s basically sensory overload in the best way:
- Loud engines
- Dirt flying
- Cars racing inches apart
- Frequent kid-focused activities and giveaways
If your child loves trucks, cars, or anything with wheels, this is likely going to be a hit. Check out the Kids Club events here.
First-Timer Tips: What to Know Before You Go
A few things I’d absolutely tell any first-timer:
- Bring Ear Protection – It is LOUD, especially for kids. Bring over-ear protection if you have it, or plan to purchase some onsite. Ear plugs are cheap and work great for adults.
- Wear a Hat + Sunglasses – Dust and dirt are part of the experience — especially on windy nights. These will help protect your eyes.
- Don’t Wear Your Best Clothes – Trust me on this. You will likely leave dusty and dirty. Plan to toss those clothes in the hamper and shower when you get home.
You can find the full track info here, including a full list of what you can/can’t bring with you.
See you at the races!
There’s something special about places like BAPS Motor Speedway — local traditions that feel a little old-school in the best possible way.
It’s exciting, affordable, and family-friendly — and it’s the kind of experience that reminds you summer fun doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.
If you’ve never been, consider this your sign to give it a try this season.
You might be surprised how much fun you have. See you at the races!
